Rhoscolyn Guide

Rhoscolyn's hot tub cottages offer a perfect base for exploring this stunning corner of Anglesey. The area sits on Holy Island's southern tip with spectacular coastal views and pristine beaches like Silver Bay and Borth Wen within walking distance.

Visitors can explore the 12th-century St Gwenfaen's Church or tackle the Anglesey Coastal Path for dramatic cliff-top walks. The White Eagle pub (4.5/5 on TripAdvisor) serves excellent food and was reportedly a favourite of Prince William during his RAF Valley posting.

Cottage options range from traditional stone buildings with original features to modern conversions with sea views. Most properties sleep 2-8 people, with larger group cottages available for family gatherings.

The addition of private hot tubs elevates the experience, providing year-round outdoor relaxation regardless of Anglesey's changeable weather. Nothing beats watching the sunset over the Irish Sea while enjoying a warm soak after a day of coastal exploration.

Sightseeing

Rhoscolyn packs a lot into a small area. The coastline here is part of the Anglesey Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty with good reason. I recommend starting at Borth Wen beach - a sheltered sandy bay perfect for swimming and paddleboarding when the tide's in.

St Gwenfaen's Church sits on a hill overlooking the village (LL65 2NQ). The current building dates from 1875 but stands on a site used for worship since the 6th century. It's open daily for visitors and the churchyard offers fantastic views.

Trearddur Bay is just 10 minutes north by car (4.5/5 on TripAdvisor) with a bigger beach and more facilities. South Stack Lighthouse (4.5/5 on TripAdvisor) is 15 minutes away (LL65 1YH, open 10am-5pm April-September) - the 400+ steps down the cliff face are worth it for the views.

Beaumaris Castle (4.5/5 on TripAdvisor) makes a great day trip, about 30 minutes' drive (LL58 8AP, open 10am-5pm daily). This unfinished masterpiece is considered the most technically perfect castle in Britain by many historians.

Pet Friendly

Dogs love Rhoscolyn! Most local beaches allow dogs year-round, unlike many UK coastal spots. Borth Wen and Silver Bay beaches have no restrictions, giving your dog plenty of space to run.

The Anglesey Coastal Path runs right through Rhoscolyn, offering miles of walking options. The section between Rhoscolyn and Trearddur Bay (about 3 miles) is particularly good - not too challenging but with great views.

The White Eagle pub welcomes dogs both inside and in their garden, even providing water bowls and treats. They've got a specific dog menu too - my spaniel rates their doggy ice cream highly!

Many cottages in Rhoscolyn cater specifically for dog owners with secure gardens, outdoor taps for muddy paws and even dog towels provided. Just check if there's an extra charge - some places add £20-30 per dog.

Top 3 attractions you have to see in Rhoscolyn

The Rhoscolyn Headland walk is unmissable. This 5-mile circular route takes you along cliff tops with views across to Snowdonia and the Lleyn Peninsula. Look out for seals in the coves below - we spotted three on our last visit! The path can get muddy after rain, so proper footwear is essential.

St Gwenfaen's Holy Well sits on the headland, a small stone structure dating back centuries. Legend says the water cures mental illness - Gwenfaen was the patron saint of mental health. The well is hard to find without directions, so ask locals or check with your cottage owner for the exact location.

The White Eagle pub deserves its reputation. This gastropub serves excellent food using local produce - their Anglesey lobster (seasonal) and Welsh lamb are standouts. They've got a large garden with panoramic views across the bay. Booking essential in summer as it gets packed, especially when hot tub cottage visitors want dinner out!

Is Rhoscolyn suitable for young children?

Yes! The beaches are safe with gentle shelving and usually calm waters. Borth Wen beach has natural rock pools for crabbing at low tide. Most cottages provide family facilities, but check if they supply items like high chairs to save car space.

How far is Rhoscolyn from Holyhead ferry port?

It's about 15 minutes by car (6 miles). If you're coming from Ireland, you can be in your hot tub very quickly after disembarking!

Are there any shops in Rhoscolyn?

No, the village is tiny with just a church and pub. The nearest shop is in Four Mile Bridge (3 miles) and larger supermarkets are in Holyhead. I recommend bringing essentials with you or arranging a delivery.

What's the best time to visit Rhoscolyn?

May-June and September offer great weather without the crowds. School holidays get busy as Anglesey is popular with families. Winter visits can be magical though - storm watching from your hot tub is quite something!

Can you see the Northern Lights from Rhoscolyn?

Sometimes! Anglesey has low light pollution and Rhoscolyn faces north-west. During periods of high solar activity (check aurora forecast websites), you might get lucky. The hot tub makes an ideal viewing platform!

Is there public transport to Rhoscolyn?

Limited. Bus service 23 runs from Holyhead but only a few times daily. A car is definitely recommended for exploring the area properly.
