What you can expect

"Dog friendly" on Anglesey usually means one or two dogs are accepted, often for a small extra charge. Some cottages keep dogs to certain rooms or ask that they stay off the furniture, and a few are strict about numbers. The cottage page spells out the rules, so read it before you book rather than after.

A hot tub sits oddly with a dog: the water and chemicals are for people, so keep dogs out and put the cover back when you are done. Most owners ask that dogs do not go in the tub, and it is a sensible rule anyway.

Walks from the door

The Isle of Anglesey Coastal Path is about 125 miles (200 km) long and circles the island, so there is a stretch within reach of almost every cottage.

  • Newborough and Llanddwyn: forest tracks and a very long beach on the south-west tip. Natural Resources Wales asks for dogs on a short lead and on the paths in the open dunes and on Llanddwyn Island in spring and summer, and part of the beach towards the island is closed to dogs from 1 May to 30 September.
  • Red Wharf Bay: a huge sweep of sand at low tide and a pub close to the shore, a few minutes from Benllech. It is not on the council's list of summer dog restrictions.
  • Cemlyn: a shingle ridge and lagoon on the north coast, west of Cemaes Bay. Terns nest on the islands in the lagoon from late spring, and signs ask for dogs on leads on the ridge during the breeding season.
  • Holyhead Mountain: a hill walk above South Stack, with sea cliffs that are best done with a dog on a lead.

Dogs and beaches: check before you go

The Isle of Anglesey County Council restricts dogs on seven beaches from 1 May to 30 September: Beaumaris, Benllech, Cemaes Bay, Llanddona, Llanddwyn (Newborough), Porth Dafarch and Trearddur Bay. The ban covers a marked part of each beach, not all of it, and at Benllech, Cemaes Bay and Trearddur Bay dogs can stay on the promenade on a lead. Other beaches, Rhosneigr and Red Wharf Bay among them, are not on the list, but read the signs at the access point in case the rules change. From October to April there are no council restrictions, and the beaches are much quieter.

Choosing the right cottage

A dog friendly cottage is not automatically right for every dog. Think about what suits yours:

  • Muddy dogs: look for a porch, boot room or outdoor tap. A garden that is not fully fenced is fine for a dog on a long lead, not for one that bolts.
  • By the sea: the coastal hot tub cottages page covers cottages near a beach.

Packing for a stay with a dog

Bring their bed and blanket, a towel for after the beach and plenty of poo bags, as bins are less common on the coast path than you would hope. Pack a short lead for the Cemlyn and Newborough stretches, and a water bottle for walks with little shade. A torch helps for the late walk before the hot tub.

Dog friendly hot tub cottages: quick answers

Can I take my dog to a cottage with a hot tub in Anglesey?

Yes. Rules on numbers and charges vary, so check the cottage page for your dates.

Are these pet friendly cottages for any pet?

They are listed as dog friendly. For other pets, and for how many dogs are allowed, check the pet policy on the cottage page or ask before you book.

Can my dog go in the hot tub?

No. Hot tub water is treated for people, and owners almost always ask that dogs stay out. Keep the cover on when it is not in use.

Are dogs allowed on Anglesey beaches?

On most, yes. The council restricts dogs on part of seven beaches from 1 May to 30 September: Beaumaris, Benllech, Cemaes Bay, Llanddona, Llanddwyn, Porth Dafarch and Trearddur Bay. Outside those dates and those marked areas, dogs are allowed.

Are dog friendly cottages more expensive?

Not always. Some owners add a pet charge.
