The Isle of Anglesey Coastal Path runs for about 125 miles, and the cottage listings use the same words for very different places. A "coastal cottage" can be on a clifftop, a few minutes from a cove or at the end of a lane with a view of the Strait. Use the nearby-beach tag as a starting point, then check three things on the cottage page: the distance to the water, whether the walk is flat, and whether you see the sea from the hot tub.
Anglesey cottages by the sea: which coast suits you
- Long sandy beaches: Rhosneigr on the west coast and Benllech and Red Wharf Bay on the east. Both are good for families because of the space at low tide.
- Rocky coves and sea views: Trearddur Bay and Rhoscolyn on Holy Island, with small sandy coves between the rock.
- A quiet north shore: Cemaes Bay, Cemlyn and the old copper port of Amlwch. Wilder, with fewer people on the path.
- The Strait: Beaumaris and Menai Bridge look across to Snowdonia, with calmer water than the open sea.
- Forest and dunes: the south-west tip around Newborough and Llanddwyn, a mix of pine forest, a huge beach and a tidal island.
Tides and safety
Anglesey's tides are big. Llanddwyn Island can be cut off at high tide, and the wide flats at Red Wharf Bay fill quickly when the tide turns. Look up the tide times for the day before you head out, and keep an eye behind you on the flats. Most beaches have no lifeguard, so swim where others are and check the flags and signs before you go in.
When to book a beach cottage
Beach cottages go first. For July and August, look in January or February; for a September or October break, a few weeks ahead is usually fine. Out of season, a cottage by the sea with a hot tub is at its best, with the cold air and the sound of the waves.
Cottages by the sea: quick answers
Which part of Anglesey is best for a cottage by the sea?
Rhosneigr and Benllech for long sandy beaches, Trearddur Bay for rocky coves, and Cemaes Bay for a quiet north coast. The Strait at Beaumaris is calmer, with views of Snowdonia.
Are the cottages right on the beach?
Few are. Most are a short walk or drive from a beach, and the listing says how far. Check the distance on the cottage page if you want to walk to the sand.
Can I have a hot tub and a sea view?
Yes, though not every coastal cottage has both. Look at the photos on the cottage page, as the hot tub and the view are often in different places.
Is it safe to walk on the beach at high tide?
Anglesey tides are large and some walks cut off. Check tide times before you set out and do not go out on the flats if the tide is coming in.
