What a low price really covers
The rate on a listing is a "from" price. It normally applies to a quiet time of year, often a winter weekday or a midweek in spring, and it rises in school holidays, bank holiday weekends and the summer. For a fair idea, use the price on the cottage page for your own dates. A few things to check:
- Hot tub charges. Some owners include the tub, others add a fee per stay. The cottage page says which.
- Minimum stays. A cheap night may need a three-night booking.
- Pet and bedding charges. Some owners charge for dogs, linen or towels, which adds up on a short stay.
- Heating. Electric heating in winter costs more than the nightly rate suggests, particularly with an electric hot tub.
How to pay less
- Go out of season. Winter and early spring outside the school holidays are usually cheapest, and a hot tub is at its best on a cold night anyway.
- Stay midweek. Sunday to Thursday nights are usually cheaper than Friday and Saturday.
- Book early or late. The best summer deals go early, but last-minute gaps in low season can be cheaper.
