Where to Stay in Anglesey

Deciding where to stay in Anglesey is mostly about the setting, because the island is only about 20 miles across and nowhere is much more than an hour's drive from anywhere else.

The short answer

Of all the places to stay in Anglesey, first-timers usually do best in Benllech or Rhosneigr: a proper beach, a few places to eat, and the road network to reach the rest of the island. Choose Holyhead if you are catching the Dublin ferry or want South Stack, Beaumaris for a castle town on the Menai Strait, and the villages around Cemaes Bay for the quiet north coast.

All the cottages below have a hot tub, and most take dogs, so the real choice is the setting: sand and surf, a working port, a harbour village or a stretch of cliff.

Benllech: the easy first choice

The bay is a wide sandy beach on the east coast, and families like it because the tide goes out a long way. Red Wharf Bay, with its huge sands and a pub on the shore, is a short drive round the coast.

Stay here if you want a beach holiday with a hot tub at the end of it and do not mind that the area is busier in school holidays. Dog owners should know that Benllech is one of seven beaches where the council restricts dogs from 1 May to 30 September, with dogs on leads on the promenade.

Holyhead and Holy Island: ferry, cliffs and good value

It is the port for the Stena Line and Irish Ferries sailings to Dublin, the nearest base for the RSPB reserve and lighthouse at South Stack, and for the walk up Holyhead Mountain, the island's highest point.

The A55 and the train line both end here, so it suits anyone arriving without a car or travelling a long way. Beyond the town, Trearddur Bay is the prettier choice on Holy Island, with rocky inlets and small sandy coves a few minutes from the cottages.

Rhosneigr: surf, kites and sunsets

Rhosneigr, on the west coast, is where Anglesey's watersports crowd gathers. Expect the occasional training jet from RAF Valley next door.

If you are not planning to get wet, the coast path south-east to the dunes at Aberffraw makes a good long walk from here.

Cemaes Bay and Amlwch: the quiet north

Cemaes is usually called the most northerly village in Wales: a small harbour with two beaches, cafes, a pub and the coast path on the doorstep. Cemlyn, with its shingle ridge, lagoon and summer tern colony, is a few miles west along the path.

This is the area for walkers, birdwatchers and anyone who wants the hot tub under a dark sky. It is a longer drive to the south of the island, so you are trading easy day trips for quiet.

Where to stay in Anglesey: quick answers

What is the best town to stay in on Anglesey?

For most visitors Benllech or Rhosneigr: both have a long sandy beach, places to eat and good road links. Holyhead is best for the ferry and South Stack, and Beaumaris for a castle town base.

Where is the best place to stay in Anglesey for a hot tub holiday?

Any base works, because the hot tub is at the cottage. Pick the setting you want to walk into: the beach at Benllech or Rhosneigr, the cliffs at Holyhead, the Strait at Beaumaris or the quiet coves around Cemaes Bay.

Is Anglesey too small to need a plan?

It is small enough to drive across in under an hour, but coast roads are slow in summer. Choose one base and treat the other end of the island as a day out.

Can I stay in Anglesey without a car?

Holyhead is the easiest car-free base, as the main line from Chester and the ferries from Dublin both end there, and Rhosneigr has a small station on the same line. Cottages in the countryside are much easier with a car.
