Sightseeing
Llanfechell sits in a prime spot for exploring Anglesey's highlights. The village itself has the ancient St Mechell's Church dating back to the 6th century - worth popping in to see the medieval font and stained glass.
Parys Mountain (LL68 9RE) is just 4 miles away and looks like something from Mars with its red, orange and purple landscape. This former copper mine was once the world's largest copper producer. TripAdvisor score: 4.5/5.
Cemaes Bay (LL67 0HA) is Anglesey's northernmost village with a lovely harbour and two beaches. The Heritage Centre tells the story of the area's maritime past. TripAdvisor score: 4.5/5.
Don't miss Cemlyn Bay Nature Reserve (LL67 0DU), managed by the National Trust and North Wales Wildlife Trust. It's home to one of the UK's largest sandwich tern colonies. The lagoon and shingle ridge make for a fascinating walk. TripAdvisor score: 4.5/5.
Pet Friendly
Many Llanfechell cottages welcome dogs and the area is perfect for four-legged visitors. The village has several footpaths leading directly into the countryside, so you can start walks right from your hot tub cottage door.
Cemaes Bay beach allows dogs year-round on the western side, while the eastern beach has seasonal restrictions. The coastal path offers miles of spectacular walking with your dog.
The Stag Inn in nearby Cemaes (LL67 0HL) welcomes dogs in the bar area and serves good pub grub. They'll even provide water bowls without you asking - always a good sign!
I recommend bringing towels specifically for your dog as the coastal paths can get muddy. Many cottages provide outdoor taps for washing down sandy paws before jumping in the hot tub.
Top 3 attractions you have to see in Llanfechell
Wylfa Head (LL67 0DH) offers spectacular coastal walks with views across to the Skerries lighthouse. The former power station visitor centre has closed, but the headland itself is stunning. A 3-mile circular walk takes you through woodland and along cliff tops. One visitor called it "the most dramatic coastal scenery on Anglesey" on TripAdvisor.
Llynnon Mill (LL65 4AB) is Wales' only working windmill, about 15 minutes' drive from Llanfechell. They mill flour on site and the café serves excellent cakes. The Iron Age roundhouses in the grounds give kids a taste of ancient history. Open 10:30-5:00 April-October. One visitor wrote: "The guide really brought history to life - and the hot chocolate in the café was amazing!"
Amlwch Port (LL68 9DB) was once the world's busiest port during the copper mining boom. The heritage centre tells this fascinating story and the harbour itself is lovely for a wander. The coastal path here is spectacular, especially with a hot tub waiting back at your cottage! Open daily 10:00-4:00. A recent visitor commented: "We had no idea about this incredible industrial history - the kids were fascinated."
Is Llanfechell suitable for families with young children?
Yes! While Llanfechell itself is small, it's just a short drive to family-friendly beaches at Cemaes Bay. Many cottages provide travel cots, high chairs and enclosed gardens. The Anglesey Sea Zoo and Pili Palas Nature World are both within 30 minutes' drive.
How far is Llanfechell from Holyhead ferry port?
Llanfechell is approximately 15 miles from Holyhead, which takes about 25-30 minutes by car. If you're coming from Ireland, you can be in your hot tub cottage within half an hour of disembarking!
Are there any good restaurants near Llanfechell?
The closest options are in Cemaes Bay (3 miles) including The Stag Inn and The Harbour Hotel. For fine dining, try The Bull in Beaumaris or Sosban & The Old Butchers in Menai Bridge (both around 30 minutes' drive).
What's the best time of year to visit?
Anglesey has a milder climate than much of Wales. Summer brings longer days for exploring, but spring offers wildflowers and fewer crowds. A hot tub cottage is brilliant in winter too - imagine stargazing from the bubbles while staying toasty!
Is there public transport to Llanfechell?
Limited. The 60 bus connects Llanfechell with Amlwch and Holyhead, but services are infrequent. I'd definitely recommend a car to make the most of your stay.
Can I see the Northern Lights from Llanfechell?
Sometimes! Anglesey's northern coast occasionally gets displays of the Aurora Borealis, particularly between October and March. The dark skies around Llanfechell make it possible to spot them from your hot tub on clear nights.
